At the store Ariana, at 3 Theatrou Street (tel. 210 3211 839), owned by the Kalothanasis brothers, we can purchase olives and delicious pickles. Andreas and Michalis continue the traditional business that their grandfather started in 1921. In their store, we find olives of all kinds, from all over Greece, while the owners are proud of those that come from their place of origin, Amfissa. Indeed, the black, green, and wrinkled olives of the region are excellent. The two brothers are involved in retail as well as wholesale and mainly purchase their products directly from the producers. “This year was perhaps the worst in the last 40 years, with very little production,” says Andreas, treating us to stuffed olives with almonds. “All our olives are preserved naturally. We very persistently avoid the fashion that has become established in recent years of treating olives with chemicals, such as caustic potash.” The variety is great: organic olives, classic Kalamata olives, crushed ones from Megara, Halkidiki and Amfissa, throumpas from Thassos, Kalamata olive slices, green olive slices, plum olives from Astros. The pickles from Tragano in Ilia rightly catch our attention. The pickled eggplant and cauliflower in particular were delicious.
